Our topic today is love for one another. Paul encourages the Thessalonian church to love one another. He acknowledges that they already show love for all believers throughout Macedonia. We recall in the previous chapters how proud Paul was of their love and their strong faith, but now he's urging them to love one another even more. This reminds us what the Lord Jesus Christ commanded his disciples when saying "So now, I am giving you a new commandment, love each other as I have loved you. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples." This love Jesus says will prove we are His disciples, is not just human love. That is God's unconditional love - Agape love.

This is part two of learning about holiness and purity in sexuality. This week, we are looking a bit more into the historic sexuality beliefs that shaped the Greek society Apostle Paul had to disciple to the Thessalonian church through the power of Holy Spirit, so that they will be redeemed and free from this sin.

Today, we are going to be looking at the Godly character of Jesus' servants, as we live to please God by learning holiness and purity in sexuality, loving one another by not sinning against each other all through the Book of Thessalonians. There was one more issue the Thessalonian church needed to deal with in order to grow in their relationship with Christ - their history in sexual sin. Sexual sin is so dangerous the instruction in the Bible for sexual temptation is to flee. This sin has been the fall of so many believers, no matter how strong their faith and powerful their ministry.

Today, we are going to be discussing commissioning through Timothy's mission to the Thessalonian church. Paul and his team were in Athens before they went to Corinth. Athens was his 15th missionary trip and after another escape from persecution. In the Book of Acts, we learn about Paul's mission in Athens, but during this time, Paul's heart was longing to visit the new church that he left in Thessaloniki - concerned about them. It was during this time that he commissioned Timothy to visit the Thessalonian church. But what is commissioning? It is Jesus modelled for us with His disciples when He would send them during His ministry on Earth.

Thessalonica was Apostle Paul's 13th out of 22 destinations in this 2nd mission trip. He preached the Gospel in the Jewish synagogues on 3 successive Sabbath days. Thereafter, he stayed for some time preaching the Gospel to both Jews and gentiles, while working to support himself. The church grew as more received Christ and some Jews who grew jealous of the church got offended. Failing to find Paul, they attacked the new believers and Paul had to be rescued by the new believers to the next town, his 14th mission destination, Beroea. When he reached his 16th mission destination, Corinth, God promised him a resting season from being hunted and persecuted, he was able to continue preaching the Gospel for a year-and-a-half. This is the time he wrote the 1st and 2nd Book of Thessalonians.

In the Book of Acts, we studied Apostle Paul's mission trips from city to city preaching the gospel and starting churches, beyond Israel to non-Jewish cities. His approach in each city was to start at a Jewish synagogue to preach salvation through Jesus Christ, and that the Messiah they have been waiting for has come and is Jesus. Jewish people knew the scriptures of what we now call The Old Testament, learning from a very young age, so Paul would try convince them with the scriptures of the prophets about the Jewish Messiah. Some would believe and some would not and go as far as to persecute Paul. Paul would then leave the synagogue and preach to the gentiles. This was the call Holy Spirit gave him

Today, we are going to start with our first church - the church in Thessalonica, discipled by Apostle Paul. We'll go into the background of the church and the history of Thessalonica. It is important to understand the history of each city Apostle Paul visited. It makes it easier to understand the context of his teachings to the that church. We also learn how to apply those teachings into our own context, as they become more relevant to us.

This is an introduction to a discipleship study, to learn to be discipled by Holy Spirit for Christ, and to disciple others through Holy Spirit for Christ. "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." But, to call on Him, they need to believe in Him, and to believe in Him, they need to hear about Him, and to hear about Him, someone needs to tell them. So Jesus sends us to go to the world and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and make disciples.

This chapter begins as Paul presents his defense in the public forum, but if you listen to his speech, you pick up that he was evangelizing by sharing his testimony. He had been ministering to Jewish people long enough to know how they would react, hence them wanting to kill him. That did not stop him from sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was not interested in self defense, but rather hoped that someone would receive the message and believe.
